Dramatic mission: American hiker rescued in mountain distress!
On Sunday evening, a 23-year-old American found himself in a worrying situation at the Zeppezauerhaus. He struggled with severe back pain and was no longer able to continue on his journey. At 5:34 p.m. he called the emergency number and alerted the mountain rescue service, which promptly responded with 16 rescuers from Grödig.
In the dark night and in high fog, the conditions for a helicopter rescue were initially anything but ideal. But the Zeppezauerhaus, a popular destination for hikers, is above the fog line, which ultimately made the rescue easier. The pilot of the C6 rescue helicopter was able to use a night vision device to locate a suitable landing site in front of the hut and successfully fly the patient to the hospital. If the helicopter had not flown, the mountain rescue team would have had to use a quad bike over the ski slope and then walk back to the Zeppezauerhaus to reach the man. This would certainly have been a risky and time-consuming option.
Rescue operations in the Salzburg area
The incident at the Zeppezauerhaus is not the only rescue operation in the Salzburg region in recent times. Another man recently had to be rescued from Untersberg, but no further details were released about how salzburg.orf.at reported.
The number of mountain accidents has increased sharply recently. According to a report by alpin.de There were numerous serious accidents in the mountains around Salzburg. At the beginning of November, five mountaineers from Germany died in an avalanche accident on the Vertainspitze. At the same time, numerous other hikers also had to be rescued after days on the mountain, such as the severely hypothermic hiker in the Steinernes Meer, who had spent almost four days in the mountains. Such operations are an enormous challenge not only for the rescuers themselves, but also for those affected.
Current events make it clear that mountain hiking, despite its fascination and beauty, is always associated with unforeseeable dangers. Mountain rescue services are therefore essential to provide quick help if something goes wrong.
