Baroque Festival in Salzburg: Monteverdi's masterpieces inspire!
On October 25, 2025, the Alte Residenz Salzburg experienced a brilliant start to the Baroque Festival organized by the Bach Society. The performance of the opera “L’Orfeo” by Claudio Monteverdi was not only a highlight, but also a masterpiece by Lautten compagney Berlin, which shone under the direction of Antonius Adamske. The artistic director of the Bach Society, Virgil Hartinger, was responsible for the production and also sang the title role of Orfeo, supported by an equally talented ensemble.
The vocalists of the Collegium Vocale Salzburg appeared as equal partners. Particularly noteworthy was Sreten Manojlović in the role of Caronte and Ekaterina Krasko, who impressively sang the roles of Musica and Euridice. Tamara Obermayr, whose mezzo-soprano thrilled the audience, took on the role of Messaggera. The solos and ensembles in the double roles of Franz Vitzthum, Bernd Lambauer, Benjamin Sattlecker and Filippo Turkheimer also made the audience cheer.
Diverse supporting program
The Baroque Festival offered much more than just the impressive opera performance. Numerous musical performances took place in the state rooms of the Old Residence. Among other things, Sophie Esterbauer played works by Giovanni Zamboni and Giovanni Girolamo Kapsberger in the Schöne Galerie. The tone:scape Ensemble also presented music by Gottfried Finger, Tarquinio Merula and Giorgio Mainerio in the conference room.
A particular highlight was the performance of the pastiche "Le choix du poète. Et Eurydice?" by the Ensemble Astrum. Pieces by Monteverdi, Graun, Telemann and Eccles were brought together. A baroque dance course also took place in the Carabinierisaal, which made the festival even more lively. Despite minor acoustic disturbances caused by uninvited visitors, the event was a thoroughly successful event and was perceived as an attractive start to the season.
Special features and ticket information
The Baroque Festival takes place as part of repetitions of the successful format in the DomQuartier, where the concert performance of “L’Orfeo” in the Carabinierisaal is once again very popular. This hall has a particular historical significance as it was the original venue for the first opera performance outside Italy in 1614. In addition to the musical performances, guests can immerse themselves in the world of the Baroque: old board games, fine food, walking concerts and madrigals from the time of Markus Sittikus await visitors.
Tickets are available at the Mozarteum Foundation ticket office for 55 euros; reduced-price tickets for students, civilian and military service workers only cost 15 euros. According to the Bachgesellschaft, evening wear is recommended to round off the festive ambience.
The festival not only stands out for its musical diversity, but also contributes to the promotion of baroque music in the region, as underlined by Drehpunkt Kultur. In the broad landscape of music festivals that celebrate early music, the Baroque Festival in Salzburg is a welcome highlight that clearly stands out from other events, as also described in the Miz.
