5.6 million euros for a new Trapp Museum: opening 2026 in Hellbrunn!

A new chapter for the city of Salzburg is just around the corner: The opening of the "Sound of Music" museum is planned for the summer of 2026. Elisabeth von Trapp, granddaughter of Georg Ludwig von Trapp, was recently present at the presentation of the construction site in Salzburg-Hellbrunn. The city and the country invest an impressive 5.6 million euros in this project, which illuminates both the history of the Trapp family and the legendary film. Finally, the film was shot in Salzburg in 1964 and celebrated its premiere in New York on March 2, 1965.

But not only the opening of the museum causes a stir. Hundreds of thousands of tourists flock to the city every year to explore the scenes of the film and to experience the magic of "The Sound of Music". The decision to build the museum in Hellbrunn was made to reduce the overtourism around the Mirabellgarten. Mayor Bernhard Auinger was extremely positive about the new location and emphasized the importance of tourism for Salzburg.

A look behind the scenes

The museum will have a clear separation into the topics of "film" and "family Trapp". Martin Hochleitner, director of the Salzburg Museum, is already looking for exciting paths to make the museum attractive for locals and visitors from Germany and Switzerland. After all, there is already a popular attraction with the famous pavilion, which plays a central role in the film. This was moved to Hellbrunn in 1991 and has been attracting tourists from all over the world since then. Elisabeth von Trapp himself was recently recognized by Asian guests and gave them tips for perfect souvenir photos.

But what do visitors actually expect in the museum and on the tours? The Original Sound of Music Tour begins in the Mirabellgarten and leads through the authentic locations of the film: from Leopoldskron Castle over the Nonnberg Kloster to Hellbrunn Castle, where the famous pavilion scene was rotated. This tour not only gives an insight into film history, but also into the life of the Trapp family, and is considered an absolute must for visitors.

Tourist highlights in Salzburg

The Panorama Tours offer numerous ways to discover the magical backdrops of Salzburg and the surrounding area-and the fully in the context of the film. Tourists visit the former home of the Trapp family in the Aigen district, the Nonnberg Monastery, where Maria lived as a novice, and the castle park of the Leopoldskron Castle, which offered the perfect backdrop for the home of Trapps.

"Sound of Music" is not only a cultural phenomenon in Austria, but also in the USA, the United States, Great Britain, Asia and Australia. If you believe the statistics, more than a billion people have seen the film, which was awarded five Oscars and are still enthusiastic.

With the combination of cultural heritage and the possibilities of exploring the city of Salzburg around the popular film, the new museum will certainly further increase the attractiveness of the city. It remains exciting how the developments around the "Sound of Music" museum will shape until the planned opening.
