Opera premiere: People, masses, power – a sound festival in Salzburg!

Today, November 12, 2025, it's time to raise the curtain again at the exciting pocket opera festival in Salzburg. With the premiere of “Mensch Masse Macht”, an innovative work that will be performed at the Odeion, the organizers Klang21 are showing that even pocket-sized opera can tell great emotions and profound stories. Pivot culture reports that the piece is based on four vocal works and the play “Masks of Evil” by Hans-Peter Jahn.

For this special performance, the festival can rely on a variety of talented participants. The SWR Vokalensemble Stuttgart is expected as a guest ensemble, while the Salzburg Festival and the Theater Children's Choir will also make a valuable contribution. Peter Rundel, who already has an excellent reputation in the music scene, is responsible for the musical direction.

A multifaceted work

In “Human Mass Power” central narratives go hand in hand with deep social themes. Based on Thomas Mann, Elias Canetti and Hannah Arendt, the conflict-laden story about Mario, a bar waiter, and Luigi, a speculator, unfolds. These two main characters are in the ring with Cipolla, who, with his hypnotic power, threatens to decide the fate of their village between tourism and idyll.

Director Thierry Bruehl presents the work in an exciting production in which singing and dramatic scenes intertwine. The little stars in the theater, the children's choir, will also delight the audience with Italian opera melodies that contrast with modern sounds.

The performance dates

The premiere begins today at 7 p.m., followed by further performances on November 13th and 15th at 7 p.m. and on November 16th at 6 p.m. Tickets are available via the Klang21 website, located at www.klang21.com is reachable.
