On October 26th, 2025, the ORF show “9 Places – 9 Treasures” named Lower Austria the best place in Austria with the Mariazellerbahn.
Lower Austria wins: Mariazellerbahn named the most beautiful place in 2025!
On Saturday evening it was that time again: The ORF show “9 Places – 9 Treasures” chose Austria’s most impressive place for 2025. This time Lower Austria was able to do so with the picturesque Mariazellerbahn reap the laurels. Moderated by Armin Assinger and Barbara Karlich, viewers cast their votes live from their living rooms to choose their favorite.
The Mariazellerbahn, an 84 kilometer long route, leads from St. Pölten through the beautiful Pielachtal to Mariazellerland. Its panoramic views of valleys, gorges and mountains made the railway a popular destination, even visited by... Guardian was ranked among the ten most attractive train journeys in Europe. A real treat for the eyes!
The rankings of the other candidates
Of course, other federal states also had their unique places that put them in the running:
- 2. Platz: Tirol – Die Kellerjochkapelle, ein historischer Ort aus dem 15. Jahrhundert, bietet nicht nur einen hohen Platz sondern auch einen weiten Ausblick über das Inntal.
- 3. Platz: Vorarlberg – Die Scheidseen sind ein Traum für Naturliebhaber und Bergsteiger, umgeben von unberührter Landschaft im Natura-2000-Gebiet Verwall.
- Kärnten – Der Danielsberg, ein mystisch anmutender Ort mit einer Höhe von 966 Metern, bietet einen Ausblick über ganz Oberkärnten und hat kulturelle Wurzeln, die bis zu römischen Tempeln reichen.
- Oberösterreich – Die Silberzeile in Schärding besticht durch ihre pastellfarbenen Fassaden und barocken Häuser am Oberen Stadtplatz, die eine malerische Stadtansicht schaffen.
- Salzburg – Die Lammerklamm ist ein wahres Naturjuwel, geformt über Jahrtausende mit spektakulären Wasserfällen und schmalen Felspassagen.
- Steiermark – Der Eorykogel, mit der größten gläsernen Weintraube der Welt, symbolisiert die enge Verbundenheit der Region mit dem Weinbau.
- Burgenland – Jois am Neusiedler See ist nicht nur ein Weinort, sondern auch Teil des Welterbe-Naturparks und bekannt für seine kulinarischen Genüsse.
- Wien – Der Stadtpark, eröffnet 1862, hält in seiner Schönheit viele historische Gebäude und das berühmte Johann-Strauß-Denkmal bereit.
The winner is chosen by jury evaluation and audience voting via telephone and SMS. Last year the Gadauner Gorge in Salzburg triumphed, and in 2023 Landskron Castle in Carinthia was voted the most beautiful place. A loyal companion of Austrian culture.
Cultural context
Austria is not only known for its impressive landscapes and sights, but also for its deep-rooted culture. The long history has produced important personalities in music history, such as Mozart and Beethoven. Viennese classical music is of great importance, and festivals such as the Salzburg Festival attract culture enthusiasts from all over the world. World-famous opera houses are an integral part of the Austrian cultural landscape, while Viennese coffee house culture acts as a meeting place for creative people. Together with the unique culinary heritage, which ranges from cozy Heurigen to typical dishes such as Wiener Schnitzel, the combination of nature and culture strengthens Austria's position in the European cultural scene.
