Mozarteum Salzburg: Top professionals Thielemann, Batiashvili and Mehner get started!

Today, October 31, 2025, the Mozarteum University in Salzburg can announce exciting news. From the coming academic year 2026/27, a new conducting class will be launched under the direction of Christian Thielemann. Thielemann, a renowned conductor with an impressive career, not only wants to impart musical skills, but also ensures individual support. “A maximum of ten applicants will be accepted in order to do justice to each individual,” explains Thielemann, who strives for a high level of musical excellence. Drehpunkt Kultur reports that…

Thielemann, who comes from Berlin, has been general music director of the Staatsoper Unter den Linden since the 2024/25 season and has already celebrated some successes with his international awards and experience, for example as artistic director of the Salzburg Easter Festival. In addition to Thielemann, two other high-profile lecturers were also appointed: the Georgian-born violinist Lisa Batiashvili and the piano professor Claudio Martínez Mehner, who have also announced that they will be teaching from autumn 2026. Renowned lecturers and their visions

Lisa Batiashvili, known for her virtuosity, sees the Mozarteum as a place of musical excellence and cultural tradition. Not only will she build her own class, but she will also create a framework for young talented musicians with her Lisa Batiashvili Foundation, which was founded in 2021. Their willingness to pass on knowledge and experience is a key concern: “I not only want to teach, but also promote the development of my students,” says Batiashvili. News.at reports that…

Claudio Martínez Mehner brings with him the extensive knowledge he acquired at renowned institutions in Europe and the USA. He will lead his piano class and cover the entire range of keyboard instruments. “I strive to create an environment that promotes musical curiosity and personal expression,” says Mehner, who is already internationally recognized as a sought-after lecturer. Drehpunkt Kultur emphasizes that...

A strong team for the future

The collaboration between the new lecturers will be all about musical excellence. Thielemann, who has over 40 years of experience in the music business, will work in particular with his colleagues Schneiderat and Fuchsberger. Together they want to offer students individual support and further develop their personalities - without creating clones. “We attach great importance to teamwork and exchange among students,” emphasizes Thielemann.

His plans also include excursions in which the class will travel to important places in music history in Bayreuth, Vienna or Berlin. These intensive experiences are intended to give students the opportunity to gain and refine both practical and theoretical knowledge in the world of music.

With these new appointments, the Mozarteum is sending a strong signal for the future and underlining its claim to the highest quality in musical education. The combination of experience, innovative approaches and passion for music will certainly enrich both the institution and the students.
