The Sattler Panorama: Return to Salzburg in new splendor!

A new era for the Sattler Panorama has begun! On October 22, 2025, the impressive circular painting by the painter Johann Michael Sattler, which shows the historic city of Salzburg in 1825, was brought to the Orangery in Mirabell Gardens. With a length of 25.53 meters and a height of 4.86 meters, it represents a unique work of art that will now be displayed in a specially furnished panoramic room. The Drehpunkt Kultur reports that the painting was previously stored in a “climate box” in the Schwarzenberg barracks for two and a half years.

The valuable work of art was transported using a specialized air-conditioned truck. A custom-made crane was used to lift the monumental painting into the new exhibition space. The effort was worth it. However, the painting will remain packed until mid-November, while the air conditioning in the visitor area and behind the canvas maintains a constant 23 degrees with 50% humidity. Judith Niedermair-Altenburg, the Salzburg Museum's chief restorer, is leading the overall project and emphasizes that smaller restorations were already decided before the dismantling.

An international heritage

The Sattler Panorama is not only an impressive work of art, but also a topographical document of inestimable value. It is considered the only remaining travel panorama in the world. Sattler began this masterpiece in 1825 at the suggestion of Emperor Franz I. The painting exhibition started in Salzburg and took place over many years through Europe's major cities such as Munich, Vienna and Paris. Sattler was even made the first honorary citizen of the city of Salzburg, as Wikipedia informs.

The change of location is part of a larger plan, as the panorama is to become the centerpiece of a new museum. The Panorama Museum Salzburg attracts numerous visitors from all over the world every year and offers an immersive experience of Salzburg's history. Visitors can look forward to interactive exhibitions and an inspiring ambience while enjoying the view with coffee and cake.

A new beginning in the Mirabell Gardens

With the move to the Mirabell Gardens, Salzburg's art-historical heritage is now being expanded to include another important chapter. The interior work on the orangery will be completed in the coming weeks. After unpacking the painting in mid-November, it will be shown in its original condition, indicating the meticulous work of the restorers. The city of Salzburg is once again demonstrating its commitment to keeping culture and history alive and making it accessible to the public. A visit to the new location will certainly delight not only art enthusiasts, but everyone who is interested in Salzburg's rich history!
