Salzburg increases bus prices: What passengers need to know now!

In Salzburg it will be more expensive to take the bus through the city from 2026. The city administration has decided to increase the prices for bus trips, and the individual ticket will then cost 3.10 euros instead of 3 euros as before. The local council decided against the votes of ÖVP and FPÖ. Mayor Bernhard Auinger commented critically about the ÖVP, which had also voted for tariff increases in the past. Delfa Kosic from the ÖVP also emphasized that it was important to preserve the attractiveness of public transport and to speak out against the price increase.

Vice Mayor Kay-Michael Dankl from the KPÖ made it clear that wages for bus drivers have to rise due to inflation. In addition, Dankl pointed out that tariff increases can also be expected in the further country of Salzburg. Among other things, this measure is intended to help cover the increased costs, which can also be observed in other major transport associations in Austria, reports N-TV.

Increasing frequency at the Gaisbergbus

Particularly gratifying for the users of the Gaisbergbuss: From autumn 2025, the bus line, which leads to the popular excursion region Gaisberg, will drive more frequently. On working days, passengers can then start every 60 minutes and every 30 minutes on weekends. The distance is currently 90 minutes during the week and 45 minutes on weekends. The Gaisberg bus is enjoying growing popularity: since 2013, the passenger numbers have tripled from 30,000 to 120,000 passengers per year.

In addition to these changes, further investments of 430,000 euros are planned for 2026 in order to improve the clock compression and general services. On ten special days, the bus will even run every 22 minutes. These days are selected by the Gaisberg coordinator.

Public debate about private transport and cable car

In public discussions, Lukas Bernitz from the citizen list called for a driving ban for private transport from the Zistelalm to protect the environment and increase the attractiveness of the region. Mayor Auinger also commented on the plans of investors to build a new cable car on the Gaisberg. However, he emphasized that the city will not provide any financial resources to support this project.

In view of these developments, it will remain exciting how the new tariffs and the expanded Gaisbergbus will affect the use of public transport in Salzburg. The focus is clearly on improving the offers and managing the challenges of increasing costs in public transport.
