160 years of Salzburg Volunteer Fire Department: Proud of history and future!

The volunteer fire department of the city of Salzburg was founded on November 11, 1865, and that was now 160 years ago. The reason for its founding was the devastating cathedral fire of 1859, which demonstrated the acute need for organized fire fighting. How Salzburg24 reports, the fire department currently has 190 active members and offers a home for 60 young Floriani. A total of 285 firefighters are part of this traditional institution, which not only creates space for active and passive members, but also provides a remarkable service to the population of Salzburg.

The beginnings of the volunteer fire department are as impressive as its development. The fire service began with three fire stations - in the Bürgerspital, Chiemseehof and Bruderhof. This Bruderhof station was in service until 1999, before the new Schallmoos fire station was put into operation. Since the 1930s, volunteer fire departments from surrounding districts have been integrated into the city fire department, which benefits the team spirit and solidarity in the region.

From the beginning to modern times

The Salzburg Fire Department is the second oldest of its kind in the state and has achieved remarkable milestones over the years. The first first aid center opened in the Bruderhof in 1909. The volunteer fire department can also proudly look back on being the only fully motorized fire department in the country as early as 1920. This innovative strength is still noticeable today, as Commander Mike Leprich made clear: “We want to support the people of Salzburg 24/7 in emergencies.”

The commitment of the volunteer fire department is enormous. Each year, members contribute around 45,000 hours to operations, exercises and administration. The weekly training services currently take place at four different locations, which ensures that the emergency services are always well prepared. In the early years, especially in the 16th century, firefighting in Salzburg was a fundamental obligation of the population, and the fire department developed from a volunteer "extinguishing institute" into a specialized disaster relief force, such as feuerwehr-bruderhof.at holds on.

A look into the future

Despite all the challenges, the Salzburg Volunteer Fire Department looks to a promising future. By continually expanding its capabilities and integrating new technologies, such as motorized fire engines and state-of-the-art emergency equipment, the fire department remains well equipped. This is particularly relevant in times when requests for assistance are constantly increasing and the dangers from natural disasters are also increasing.

Today, the Salzburg Volunteer Fire Department is not only an integral part of disaster control, but also an essential part of the community in which it operates. How feuerwehrfan.at In summary, over 99% of firefighters in Austria are active in volunteer fire departments. This unique commitment and deep roots in the population make the Salzburg Volunteer Fire Department a role model and a beacon of hope for the future safety of the city and its residents.
