City of Salzburg and Stiegl Brewery: Make green spaces future-proof!
In Maxglan, a district of Salzburg, an agreement is emerging between the city of Salzburg and the Stiegl brewery, which aims to ensure the harmonious development of the brewery location. According to information from Salzburg24, the two parties have agreed on a common approach to future development. The central element is the introduction of a temporary construction ban for the 15,000 square meter meadow area in front of the brewery.
The planned construction freeze is intended to ensure that future developments are in line with the city's urban development goals and the brewery's operational needs. Planning City Councilor Anna Schiester emphasizes that the dialogue between the parties has so far been constructive and solution-oriented. The aim is to reconcile the brewery's economic interests with public needs, as bringing these aspects together at an early stage can only be beneficial in achieving the long-term goal.
Sustainable urban planning in focus
The events in Maxglan are part of a larger framework of sustainable urban development. The protection of grassland is particularly important for the city; According to Schiester, 57 percent of the city's area is secured as such. This shows that a balance is sought between the preservation of natural areas and the development of urban spaces. This philosophy corresponds to the recommendations of the ÖREK partnership “Strengthening town and city centers”, which was launched in 2017 to improve the quality of life in urban areas while promoting their economic vitality (örok.gv.at).
A central concern of this partnership is to promote internal development and take into account the multifunctionality of town and city centers. In particular, the focus should be on residential function, local amenities and the preservation of the historical building structure. The results of the partnership were published in autumn 2019 in the form of ten specialist recommendations for strengthening town and city centers.
Review of previous plans
The first foundations for future use of the brewery site were laid between 2010 and 2012. These plans should now be updated and reviewed in order to adapt them to the current objectives of the new spatial development concept (REK). If the city loses its original function, this could have a negative impact on its attractiveness and quality of life, as the results of the ÖREK partnership make clear.
Through their joint commitment, the city of Salzburg and the Stiegl Brewery show that they are aware of the challenges that come with urbanization and urban development. The collaboration makes it clear that we have a good knack for protecting the interests of everyone involved and at the same time sustainably developing the city (orf.at).
