Mozart's Missa Brevis: Lent sound in Cologne Cathedral Vault!

Music lovers in Salzburg can look forward to a real masterpiece by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is the focus of an upcoming radio program. Today, on October 3, 2025, Missa Brevis in D (KV 65) will be in the program of Domradio.de broadcast. The special thing: This fair was created when Mozart was only 12 years old and was dated January 1769. Experts suspect that she was written for a service in the Salzburg College Church during Lent. In keeping with the Lent, the Missa Brevis is kept in Moll-Tonart, which gives the work a melancholic note.

Another interesting aspect is that the Gloria may not have been listed, which fits wonderfully with the contemplative atmosphere of Lent. The occupation of the fair is remarkable because it has parallels to Mozart's later requiem - trombones are also used here. Mozart often ends in his sentences with empty fifths, which gives the sound of the fair additional depth. The Cologne Cathedral Choir worked with the Cologne Chamber Orchestra and Christoph Poppen for the recording.

The occupation and features of the Missa Brevis

The Missa Brevis in D major (K. 194/186H), which was completed in 1774, is another contemporary witness to Mozart's creative power. This trade fair, which goes back to an order from Archbishop Colloredo, comprises six sentences and has a performance duration of around 15 minutes. Here are the most important features:

  • Kyrie – Andante, D-Dur, 4/4
  • Gloria – Allegro moderato, D-Dur, 4/4
  • Credo – Allegro, D-Dur, 3/4
  • Et incarnatus est – Andante moderato, D-Dur, 4/4
  • Et resurrexit – Allegro, D-Dur, 3/4
  • Sanctus – Andante, D-Dur, 4/4
  • Pleni sunt coeli et terra – Allegro, D-Dur, 3/4
  • Benedictus – Andante ma non troppo, G-Dur, 4/4
  • Hosanna in excelsis – Allegro, D-Dur, 3/4
  • Agnus Dei – Andante, B-Moll → D-Dur, 3/4
  • Dona nobis pacem – Allegro, D-Dur, 4/4

The Missa Brevis in D major typical of Mozart's style: it has a reduced orchestra line-up, few joint-like elements and mainly relies on homophone structures. The premiere took place in the Salzburg cathedral - a place that is closely linked to Mozart's musical work.

A look at the life of the genius

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, born on January 27, 1756 in Salzburg, is considered one of the most important composers in western music history. At the age of four, he received music lessons from his father, Leopold Mozart, a talented chamber musician. Over the years, Mozart's extraordinary talent has been shown, which led to numerous trips and big appearances, especially in Europe. He quickly developed into a sought -after composer.

However, his life path was not only shaped by fame. In 1778 he experienced the tragic loss of his mother, which influenced his further decisions. Finally Mozart decided in 1781 to give up his job with Archbishop Colloredo in order to act as a freelance composer in Vienna.

His works such as "The kidnapping from the Serail" and "Le Nozze di Figaro" are standard repertoire today. Mozart died on December 5, 1791 and left a heir that still enjoys music lovers and experts.

The upcoming radio program is therefore not only a tribute to the Missa Brevis in D, but also a wonderful opportunity to immerse yourself in the sound worlds of the young Mozart. The Cologne cathedral music, which co -designed the program, also shines on these masterpieces outside of Cologne and remains an important cultural ambassador. Be there and be captured by the musical magic!
